Making Waves Lab

Waves. It is a simple idea but once you get into it, well there it becomes COMPLICATED.

In class we did a lab about waves, how they respond and how they affect different obstacles on water.  After the lab we did an online simulation and tried different things with it. I did 3 examples of different waves, so here it is.
Experiment Number 1-
Frequancy: 50
Amplitude: 50
First i set both on half to see what happens. Since i didn't like the top view i rotated it to the side so i have an amazing side view of waves. There is more than one drop coming out of the pipe causing the waves to stretch really high up and touching the top. Then they continue in the same height and speed.

Expiriment Number 2- 
Frequency- 20
Amplitude-  100
I set them differently know and got many interesting results. This time my frequency is quiet low and the amplitude is the highest possible. I also moved the pipe to the middle which caused a huge change. There are huge drops coming out of the pipe one by one. When they are falling the waves go all the way up to the top of the screen. When the drop touches the water it splits in half which causes the wave to separate and respond to the left and the right.
Expiriment Number 3- 
Frequency- 10
Amplitude-9
This time the pipe is still in the middle but the drops are very small. They are slowly falling down one by one. It looks as if someone forgot to completely close the tap. The little drop creates slow ad small waves that continue traveling to both sides of the pipe. 


Those were the three different experiences that i did with he online simulation. Know below are my Data Analysis, Conclusion and Further Inquiry.
Data Analysis: What patterns of relationships to you see in your data table/ shetches/ images?
We did many different ways and used different props to see how waves respond. We noticed that whenever we drop the drop from a lower and further distance from the cork it didn't affect it. When we dropped it from a higher and closer distance it affected the cork and the waves bounced back. When we dropped drops of water into spaces with very hard and heavy objects like clay, it didn't affect it because it was too heavy to lift it and go under but it simply bounced off it and created returning waves.
Conclusion: What do you conclude about the behavior of waves in the various situations you created today? Can you answer the guiding question now? 
In conclusion we gathered many different observations and sketched many different scenes with different drops, and obstacles.  We can clearly see that the height and distance form where you drop the drop affects everything about the obstacle. When we have different obstacles like the cork and the clay the drops affect it in different ways. For example the waves bounce of the clay and the waves go under and move the cork. When the had a paper towel the waves went under and on top. Then here is my answer to the guiding question: When a pipette is used to drop drops into the pan the waves go in many different waves. Where you drop the drop affects the shape of the waves and where it will bounce of it and where and how it will return. A mechanical wave needs an obstacle to travel. A mechanical wave needs a disturbance in water. When a wave come across a solid object it reacts in many different ways. For example if you have a very heavy and dense object like clay it will not move it but it will bounce from it and created returning waves. If the obstacle is light, a cork for example it will go under it or push it in a direction and help it travel.

Grade 7 End of "Astronomy" End of Unit Reflection

Question Number 1: Students will understand that the earth's and moon's motions affect the tides and climate of earth. Explain what you know.
Tides are caused by the different fazes of the moon. The moon rotates around our planet. When it rotates the sun shines of different angels of the moon and therefor we can only see the light part of the moon. When the moon is completely black which means that the sun is not shining on the moon and therefor it is not seen and that causes tides. When the moon is not partly hiding behind the earth and the sun is shining on it completely that causes tides too. There are 4 tides in a day. 2 low and 2 high tides. The new moon causes low tides which causes the water to push out the sides of the earth. When there is a full moon that causes high tides which makes the water on top and bottom of the earth push out. 
Question Number 2: Students will understand that scientists are using the knowledge they have of Earth's surface and atmosphere in search of extraterrestrial life. Explain what you learned. 
Our earth has helped us understand what a future earth will need in order to support human life. If we were to ever need another earth, which we will at some point it needs to be similar to what we have know and have the features that earth has so it is able to support human, animal and plant life. Most important features are; water, atmosphere, land, oxygen and minerals. 
4. How has the development on technology and space flight helped astronomers learn more about the other parts of the solar system and the structure of the universe?

Space Exploration: Is it worth the cost?

Space Exploration is very expensive. Millions of dollars are spent  on flying people up out to space, making all those space ships, robots and space equipment. But is it really worth it? Do we need all those things in order to educate ourselves? Do we need to know so much about our moon, the planets that orbit around the sun with us? Or is it enough to just complete all the studies that we can on Earth? Know that is a trick question because so many people have so many different opinions but in the end they just separate into two groups; agree of disagree. There are advantages and disadvantages to space exploration and the money spent on it. In this essay I will give my opinion and explain why or why not the money is worth it. Lets start, shall we?

Paragraph Number 1-
In your own words, discuss the various costs and benefits of space exploration.
·       "Many Americans think that Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon was a great moment in history." Personally I think that, that day everything changed. We stepped on a planet that was not Earth, with 0 gravity pull. How cool? But along with that amazing discovery came the worries. Billions of dollars were spent on that trip, and do you know how risky that was? What if the experiment failed? What if they all died and all those lives and money were spent for nothing? Those are the questions in our heads that we can never answer with a feeling of certainty. How are we supposed to know that something won't go wrong while the rocket is being lifted into space? We do our best but there is still lots of risks. Remember the big accident years back? Many lives were taken and that day was memorable. We will never forget it. Sure that learning about how to keep people alive in space has led to great improvements in our daily life but there are always RISKS. You can never know for sure what will happen. Of course, most of the time the lift offs are a success but what if some day when you happen to be on a space ship, exited to be traveling to Mars and then something goes wrong and the rocket blows up. Things like that have happened and we all know that. A US senator said,” Every time you put money into space stations, there is a dime that won’t be available for our children’s education or for medical research.” I absolutely agree. When we contribute money to send people to space we do it because we hope that they will return with more information and new data. But sometimes they don't. But we can't predict those time so, all we are left with is hope. And it can't be ones fault, it always comes to a problem that the whole crew needs to take into their hands and deal with. Flying to space is scary, dangerous and hard but look how much it has affected our daily life!
·       We have safer equipment for firefighters, easier ways to package frozen food and heart monitors which help us save lives. All those things came from space program research and they help us more and more. I have never met Howard Dean but my research says that he agrees with my statement. "Space exploration is terrific", but went on to ask – "Where is the tax increase to pay for it? It is not worth bankrupting the country." is what Howard says. And I agree. I mean space exploration is fantastic but lives are exposed to danger and money is spent on things that might not even be a success, we already know or in the best case new information which help us with discovering new things and receiving new information. Since the beginning of the space exploration people have been arguing about the pros and cons of the subject. "If our nation can spend … twenty billion dollars to put a man on the moon, it can spend billions of dollars to put God's children on their own two feet right here on earth." is what highly respected man like Martin Luther King Jr. state. I must say that I agree because the costs for receiving information that will make our daily lives easier has to be pied with a very high price. There is so much money spent on it and that money could be used to help poor children, or humans with health problems. Both sides of the argument are resealable but which one has over weighted the other one? Spending money on space research and sending people into space or keeping all the money for doing research on earth and using the rest to save lives and help people who need medical treatment?                                                                                                                       Paragraph Number 2 and 3
       Make suggestions for three different approaches to space exploration:  sending humans to the moon or another planet, doing only Earth-based research, and one other opinion/suggestion for possible space exploration. 3.  What are the benefits and drawbacks of each of these approaches.                                           All three of these options seem reasonable and possible. Sending people to the moon or other planets, doing research on only earth based things or spending all the money that we have spent on space exploration to cure diseases and help poor people and people who live in terrible conditions improve their lifestyle and help them live a healthier life. All three situations have their pros and cons. Know if I were to agree with the option of sending people to the moon and other planters I would have to accept the fact that billions of dollars would be spent on sending people out to space and finding new or old research. I would also say that I agree with the fact that all their lives are exposed to great danger and are at risk at all times. Nothing is 100% guaranteed but we always hope for the best. If we were to send out people and use billions of dollars to space we would achieve great things and discover many interesting things about outer space and all the planets around us but we would also expose people to danger and risk their lives on something that we need but might be able to continue living without. Greg Fish is a scientist who wrote an article "Never Send a Machine to Do a Human's Job". In the article he clearly stated the following," Humans aren't suited for space. We're not good with radiation or microgravity, and extended stays in space radically increase our risk of cancer, shrink our hearts, atrophy our muscles, and make our bones brittle. But that's what happens when you're a complex organism evolving on a particular planet. You have to rely on your technology to survive the rigors of space travel." I think that he is trying to express, in a very difficult language that we should without a doubt send up humans into space because machines cannot gather the information that we can. They are not complex enough although space affects us in a bad way we have better chances of collecting evidence and information about space then they. We have adapted to many things before in our lives so we should try and adapt to space because after all we are finding out new information and evolving. Robots have proven time and time again how good they are at exploring alien worlds. But that does not mean that humans haven't. If I were to choose and agree with the second option which is to keep the money for studies about the Earth I would have to take into consideration that things like freezers which we discovered with the science space exploration would not continue and we would only learn about Earth and everything in the beginning. But again Earth is a planet, part of a galaxy and everything that has happened to it leads back into the outer space which is why we need to study it. Earth is in space. We need to know about ourselves but we also need to know about our surroundings which in our case is outer space, which all involves rockets and all the risks and money that I have talked about earlier. Earth and outer space and space exploration are all connected and you can not learn about one without something leading you back to the other. Everything is connected and things will lead you to conclusions which will be connected to the outside and we will want to know more, so we will go back to spending billions of dollars on sending people into space which is what we are doing know. It is like a cycle which we can't escape except if we completely forget about everything and let the future continue without us researching more about it and just simply let everything take its place. Forget about the future and live the present moment. Then if I choose to agree with the 3rd topic which is using the money that we spend on space exploration for helping humans develop and live a better life I would need to know that space technology has lead us to all those cool inventions like heart monitors. We need modern technology to cure diseases that are appearing. If we were to focus on our children, their education, curing sick people and helping poor and people who live in horrible conditions we will ALWAYS need space technology to guide us towards new inventions and things that we need in order to change things from what we have know. Science is a gigantic part of our life and it affects us in many, many ways. We need modern technology to help us survive and make, create new things. We can't simply forget space exploration and use all the money to keep people healthy because diseases will return and then money will be spend for nothing again. Of course there will be many lives saved but then people will create a habit of getting sick and believing that we can always save them which will eventually turn out to be false since we will run out of money. Like I said before everything is connected and joined into one and we need a little but of each one to create a life that is as perfect as possible for everyone. 
kc   Paragraph Number 4:
       Imagine that you are a member of Congress (government), who has to vote on a new budget (money to be spent).  There is a fixed amount of money to spend, so you have to decide which needs to your country is the most important.  Discuss the top five to ten priority areas (such as medical research, health, transportation systems, roadways, education, science studies, etc...).  Give back-up or your reasoning for your decision. Which would get the most funding (money)?  Where do you think space exploration should be in your prioritized list?
 w   If I were to rule a medium sized country my top 7 things to spend money on would be:
 1. Medical Research
k      2. Curing the sick and helping the poor
n      3. Children Education
        4. Space Exploration
        5. Science Studies/Earth and Space studies
        6. Discovering new medicine
        7. Transportation without pollution
        8. Machines for recycling water
      Those are the top 8 things that I would use the money if I had it for. The first 6 are key. I would dedicate the most money to those because after all medicine, health and education is very important for our people. Many people around the world are sick and need help to be cured. Education of our children is very important because the more people are educated the further we can dig and find more information about ourselves and how to continue our way of living. We need to know more in order to make more decisions. Yes, we know that we are spending tons of money and lives on space exploration but it might be worth it. Where in history would be be know if it wasn't for science and space exploration? Would be still be in the Homo Erectus faze? Science and space has helped us develop and grow and build what we have know. And we can continue doing so but if there is a way to loose less lives and spend less money while doing so we need to find it and start making it happen because it's important and needs to be done! 

 I    In conclusion I think that we should continue doing what we are doing know but at the same time start digging deeper and finding ways of using less money and loosing less lives and having less risks while exploring space. I also think that we should spend less money on that particular subject because we need to invest into other things such and children education and curing the sick and finding medicines for diseases that we cannot cure yet. The money is worth it 111%! That is my final opinion!
